LONDON (AlertNet)

- Reuters photographer Finbarr O'Reilly has won the prestigious 2006 World Press Photo of the Year award for a picture documenting Niger's famine in August 2005.

The image, selected from more than 83,000 photos taken by 4,448 professional photographers from 122 countries, shows the fingers of malnourished one-year-old Alassa Galisou pressed against the lips of his mother Fatou Ousseini at an emergency feeding clinic in the northwestern town of Tahoua.

One of Niger's worst droughts in living memory destroyed much of last October's crop, leaving an estimated 3.6 million people short of food, including tens of thousands of children.
