Actress and UNICEF Goodwill Ambassador Mia Farrow and NBC news anchor Ann Curry joined a Reuters Newsmaker panel in New York for a hotly debated discussion on the conflict in Darfur.
Introduced by Reuters America President Jon Robson and moderated by Political & General News Editor Paul Holmes, the event was also attended by the U.S State Department’s Senior Representative to Sudan, Lauren Landis.
Landis defended U.S. policy on the conflict, dismissing accusations from the Sudanese ambassador that Washington wanted “regime change” in Khartoum and arguing that despite branding the killing as genocide the Bush administration believed patience was needed to bring about a solution.
Farrow, who has made four high-profile visits to Darfur, argued for more pressure on China, which has substantial interests in Sudan and supplies the government with arms.
The event took place at the New York Historical Society in Manhattan on May 24 and drew an audience of journalists, aid workers, diplomats, students and activists.
