Sixteen Chinese journalists gathered in Beijing for  Reuters Foundation’s latest workshop at Tsinghua University, eager for pointers on how to cover business news as they report on the world’s fastest-growing major economy.

Reuters News trainers Lisa Essex and Quentin Webb, on their second trip to Tsinghua’s School of Journalism and Communication, covered topics including the economic cycle; central banks; futures and options; stock markets and IPOs; journalistic ethics; and China’s nascent corporate bond market.

Essex and Webb were deeply impressed by the knowledge, enthusiasm and commitment shown by participants on the course -- which took place as China dealt with the aftermath of May’s devastating earthquake and the capital geared up to host the 2008 Olympics.

The week was enlivened by guest speeches from Tsinghua professors Xiguang Li and Cao Jingxing; long-serving Time magazine editors Don and Ann Morrison; and Benjamin Lim, Reuters chief political correspondent for Greater China.

The June 2-6 course was the 11th workshop run by the Foundation and Tsinghua. It brought together reporters and editors from China Securities Journal, Xinhua news agency, state broadcaster CCTV, English-language newspaper China Daily, and four other publications.
