The dry season has arrived in the Delta region of Myanmar and people are anxious about having enough drinking water to carry them through to the rainy season. Communities hard hit by Cyclone Nargis are especially vulnerable due to damage and loss of water sources. People prepare by storing water and building ponds as part of cyclone Nargis recovery water and sanitation activities with NGOs, the Red Cross and the UN with funding from the European Commission Humanitarian Aid department (ECHO).

The European Commission has provided 39 million Euros in funding for cyclone Nargis survivors and remains one of the largest humanitarian donors in Myanmar/Burma.

Stacey Winston, regional information officer for east and southeast Asia for the European Commission Directorate General for Humanitarian Aid (ECHO), recently travelled to Myanmar to document and photograph recovery efforts in the aftermath of Cyclone Nargis. The devastating storm swept across the Irrawaddy Delta region of Burma in early May 2008, triggering a huge sea surge and leaving around 138,000 dead or missing, according to official figures.
