The Dalai Lama joined calls for quick action to curb climate change Wednesday, saying he was concerned about the effects on Tibet's glaciers, its people and the many South Asians dependent on rivers originating in the Himalayan region.

"The problem is much more serious than it is perceived to be," the Tibetan Buddhist leader said at an address in the Indian state of Orissa Wednesday. "The glaciers are melting at a faster rate in the Himalayan region and deep inside Tibet. So it is very essential that we address it fast."

He called climate change, "a major problem the world is facing today."
