Effective ways to combat climate change are available, accessible and replicable. That's the message of a new United Nations Environment Programme campaign, launched Monday, that aims to highlight 30 different ways of dealing with climate change in the lead-up to the U.N. Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) talks in Cancun, starting in late November.
The 30 Ways in 30 Days series shows how a variety of approaches, from creating mass markets for solar water heaters to making low-carbon tourism easier, can help reduce carbon emissions and curb the expected impacts of climate change.
The highlighted case studies focus on projects that "embody innovation and creativity" and "harness benefits for the people they serve," the UNEP website says.
With hopes already dim for significant progress in the Cancun negotiations, it's useful to remember that outside the negotiating rooms, communities, companies and governments already are at work testing and trying to scale up solutions that, taken together, could make a difference.
