WASHINGTON, Jan 3 (Reuters) - The United States is optimistic about Sudan's referendum on Sunday on independence for southern Sudan, but believes there is still much work to do to ensure peace holds in Africa's largest country, the State Department said on Monday.

"At this point, we are optimistic about the referendum this coming weekend," State Department spokesman P.J. Crowley told a news briefing. "We also are very sober in that, depending on the choice made by the people of south Sudan this weekend, we know there is still a long way to go and a difficult road ahead."
