Safeway recalls platters over salmonella scare

NEW YORK, May 9 (Reuters) - U.S. grocery operator Safeway expanded its recall on foods containing grape tomatoes due to possible salmonella contamination.

Safeway said on Monday it is voluntarily recalling "Eating Right Veggie Party Platter". It said the product was packaged by Mann's Packing using grape tomatoes sourced from grower Six L's that were recalled due to possible salmonella contamination.

A week ago, Safeway recalled cubes of meat called kabobs, which include grape tomatoes, from its Safeway, Vons, Pavilions and Pak N Save stores in several states including Arizona and California. [ID: nL3E7G40P6]

On May 2, the company had recalled cafe salads and deli salads made with grape tomatoes. [ID: nASA021ID]

Safeway said on Monday no illness had been reported and the recall was a precautionary measure.

Salmonella is an organism that can cause serious and fatal infections, particularly in young children, the elderly, and persons with weakened immune systems.
