KPK yet to decide whether to impose "forced summons," says paper

BANGKOK (TrustLaw) – A missing politician from Indonesia’s ruling Democrat Party was summonsed yet again on Monday by the Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) and he has, once again, not responded to it, the Jakarta Post reported.

KPK has not yet decided on whether it should impose a “forced summons,” the paper added.

Muhammad Nazaruddin has been summonsed four times because of probes in two corruption cases – the construction of an athlete’s dormitory for the Southeast Asian Games being held in November 2011 and the procurement of projects commissioned by the National Education Ministry in 2007.

He fled to Singapore on May 23 after being fired from his post as treasurer of the ruling party, and a day before he was issued with a travel ban.

According to the Jakarta Globe, a lawmaker from Nazaruddin’s party said he would return to Jakarta “within two or three weeks.”

The summons on Monday was for Nazaruddin to testify for the Youth and Sports Ministry secretary, Wafid Muharram, named as a suspect in the case, the Post quoted KPK deputy chief Haryono Umar as saying.

The project for the athlete’s dormitory was commissioned by the Youth and Sports Ministry.

The Post said the case involved three suspects – Muharram as well as a broker and the marketing director of PT Duta Graha Indah, the company that won the bid for the project.

The three were arrested on April 21 at the ministry’s office in Jakarta, hours after the marketing director allegedly handed over a cheque worth 3.2 billion rupiah. (US$371,200) to the secretary.
