Typhoon Ma-on struck Japan as a tropical storm at about 00:00 GMT on 20 July.Data supplied by theUS Navy and Air Force Joint Typhoon Warning Centersuggest that the point of landfallwasnear33.6 N,135.6 E.Ma-on brought 1-minute maximum sustained winds to the region of around111 km/h (69 mph).Wind gusts in the area mayhave beenconsiderably higher.
