In Haiti, hurricane Irene left two people dead, forced 1,000 people to evacuate to U.N. emergency centres and flooded swathes of farmland, according to the United Nations

Neighouring Dominican Republic was worse hit. Nearly 32,000 people were forced to leave their homes and take refuge in schools and churches on Wednesday following heavy flooding caused by Hurricane Irene, authorities say. The tropical storm is now making its way towards New York and New England.
