The Philippines’ Commission on Audit (COA) has unearthed “ghost” deals involving a total of at least 2.6 billion pesos ($61.4 million) in the Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao and in Maguindanao Province in the politically volatile southern island of Mindanao, the Philippine Star reported.

The irregularities, which took place last year, included transactions entered by the office of the regional governor, and amounted to a billion pesos ($23.6 million) which cannot be considered legitimate because they were supported by “spurious” documents, the paper quoted the chair of the COA as saying.

Transactions of some 856 million pesos ($20 million) in Maguidanao may also be considered “fictitious” because these were either denied by suppliers or supported with false documents, it added.
