LONDON (AlertNet) - South Sudan, Africa’s newest country and one of its poorest, has pledged $1 million in aid towards alleviating the famine and drought in the Horn of Africa, according to a statement published on all.Africa.com.

South Sudanese President Salva Kiir said although his country’s contribution may be modest compared to the massive needs in the crisis, the donation was an important symbolic gesture, underscoring South Sudan’s commitment to the region.

South Sudan, which became independent in July, is one of the least developed countries in the world.
