Strong quake hits southwestern China - USGS

SYDNEY, March 9 (Reuters) - A strong earthquake with an initial magnitude of 5.8 hit the Xinjiang region of remote southwestern China on Friday, the United States Geological Survey (USGS) said. There were no initial reports of damage or casualties.

The quake hit 218 km (136 miles) southeast of Aksu in Xinjiang, close to the border with Kyrgyzstan. It was measured at a depth of about 36 km (22 miles). (Reporting by Paul Tait; Editing by John Mair)
