Six adults and one child hurt in explosion at new mothers' hospital

LONDON (AlertNet) – Medical charity Medecins Sans Frontieres (MSF) has suspended work at a recently opened maternity hospital in eastern Afghanistan's Khost province after an explosion injured seven people at the unit.

“The suspension will continue until we receive assurances from the actors controlling those areas that medical activities can take place unhindered, and that the security of patients, medical staff and health facilities will be respected, as previously agreed,” said Renzo Fricke, MSF’s country representative in Afghanistan.

MSF said it was still investigating the circumstances around the Tuesday morning explosion, in which six adults and one child were hurt.

The 56-bed hospital has overseen 600 births since opening in early March. MSF said patients would be referred to the maternity unit at Khost Provincial Hospital.
