Aswat Masriya (AM) is looking to recruit an experienced journalist to act as a Financial and Business editor and a financial journalism mentor for the Aswat Masriya website (www.aswatmasriya.com). This is an 18-month contract, based in the Reuters bureau in Cairo.

Aswat Masriya (AM) is looking to recruit an experienced journalist to act as a Financial and Business editor and a financial journalism mentor for the Aswat Masriya website (www.aswatmasriya.com). This is an 18-month contract, based in the Reuters bureau in Cairo.  

 

Aswat Masriya (www.aswatmasriya.com) is a website in both Arabic and English that provides essential news and information around governance and politics in Egypt. Aswat Masriya began as news service covering the Egyptian elections but is evolving to cover more general governance news, with a focus on regional politics, women’s rights, and business and finance. The website is part of a larger Thomson Reuters Foundation (www.trust.org/trustmedia) initiative to strengthen the media in Egypt, along with a programme of elections reporting courses for journalists and media training for members of parliament.

 

Duties and Responsibilities

 

-       Edit financial and business content on Aswat Masriya and file stories on financial and business news for Aswat Masriya, ensuring that all content is in line with Reuters standards of objectivity, independence and accuracy.

 

-       Act as a mentor to approximately five Egyptian journalists writing on finance and business. The journalists will write articles for Aswat Masriya on topics set by the mentor which will be edited by the mentor, who will liaise with the journalists to provide feedback and encourage the development of their journalistic skills.

 

-       Manage a team of stringers who report on financial and business news, including commissioning articles and ensuring that finance and business is covered evenly and thoroughly on Aswat Masriya.

 

-       Coordinate and deliver any special features on Finance or Business.

 

-       Work with AM’s marketing manager to engage media outlets to both provide content on finance and business to Aswat Masriya and to use Aswat Masriya’s financial and business content on their sites.

 

-       Provide journalism training in Financial and Business reporting (Training of Trainers course will be provided) for the training component of the wider Aswat Masriya project.

 

Experience and skills required

-       Strong editorial experience, familiarity with Reuters journalistic principles and standards.

-       Proven experience reporting on finance and business, and an excellent knowledge of finance and business in Egypt.  

-       Excellent written and verbal communication skills.

-       Demonstrates drive and enthusiasm and the ability to work off own initiatives

-       Fluent in English and Arabic

-       Egyptian citizen.
