World's Top Five New Displacements in 2012

 

1)      Syria – 2.4 million

2)      Democratic Republic of Congo – 1 million

3)      Sudan – 500,000

4)      India – 500,000

5)      Pakistan – 412,000

 

World's Top Five Internally Displaced Populations

 

1)      Colombia – 4.9 to 5.5 million

2)      Syria – 3 million

3)      Democratic Republic of Congo – 2.7 million

Quick Facts

 

  • Global displacement rose to 28.9 million in 2012 from 26.4 million the previous year.

 

  • Over 6.5 million were newly displaced in 2012, almost twice that of 2011.

 

  • There are roughly two IDPs for every refugee worldwide – 28.8 million compared with 15.2 million.

 

  • Sub-Saharan Africa has the most IDPs in the world with 10.4 million, almost one-third of the global total.
