Life in a Colombian rebel stronghold

Colombia’s southwestern province of Cauca is a key drugs corridor and an epicentre of the country’s 50-year-old conflict being fought hundreds of miles away from the capital Bogota.

As the Colombian government and rebels from the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia, or FARC, hold ongoing peace talks in Havana to end Latin America's longest-running insurgency, it will be in rebel fiefdoms and drug corridors like Cauca where peace will be hardest to build and hardest won.

This video shows how local farming and indigenous communities get caught in the crossfire and are forced to dodge bullets, homemade rebel rockets and flee their homes.

This video is part of a Thomson Reuters Foundation special report: Colombia peace hinges on battleground drug corridors.
