Thomson Reuters Foundation has provided a video training course for journalists from a leading Ukrainian news channel. Sixteen TV reporters and camera operators from the news department of the highly rated 1+1 channel attended the course in Kiev. Some were based in the Ukrainian capital, while others travelled from places as far away as Odessa, Zaporizhzhya, Simferopol and the Crimea region, to attend the five-day course.

The course was taught by Reuters Washington DC cameraman Kevin Fogarty and former Reuters Editor of Television Production, Lloyd Watson, who now works as an international media consultant.

The journalists spent the week studying and discussing all aspects of video news production including camerawork, scripting, editing and appearing on camera. The course was based on the Foundation's highly popular and successful Making Video News course, which has been taught to thousands of TV journalists globally. It was adapted to incorporate 1+1's emerging online offering and to help journalists better integrate coverage across broadcast and online platforms. This involved reporters using mobile devices to capture the essential video of a story while simultaneously working on making more traditional television packages.
