NEWS: A NEW SCHOOL IN THE PHILIPPINES

It has been several months since Typhoon Bopha struck the people of Mindanao, Philippines, and the effects of the storm continue to be felt. Survivors camp at the Department of Social Welfare and Development to request food supplies while shelter, education, and other basic needs remain unmet.

The United Methodist Committee on Relief (UMCOR) is assisting the Ata-Manobo Tribal Community, which was greatly impacted by the typhoon, by helping to rebuild the Salugpungan Ta’ Tanu Igkanogon Community Learning Center. The school works with the Manobo tribe to enhance life skills and teach the basics of writing, reading and arithmetic.

UMCOR is also providing school kits for 300 students, and livelihood support as the community participates in rebuilding the school through food-for-work opportunities.

Typhoon Bopha (known locally as Pablo), struck the Philippines last December. The category-5 storm cut a swath of devastation mainly across the southern island of Mindanao. It forced some 300,000 people to flee to evacuation centers and other temporary shelters.

Your gifts to Philippines Emergency, UMCOR Advance #240235 support recovery efforts in Mindanao and elsewhere.
