News: Support for Conflict Survivors in DR Congo
Fighting continues in North Kivu province in eastern Democratic Republic of the Congo. The conflict between government and rebel forces has caused thousands of people to flee from their homes and settle into formal camps, churches, or schools, placing a significant strain on limited resources and an already weak health system.
The United Methodist Committee on Relief (UMCOR) is supporting the United Methodist Church of DR Congo to provide primary health care services to affected populations through the Majengo Health Center in the city of Goma.
The health center, which is seeing an increased patient load of about 900 cases per month, will receive a three-month supply of medicine to help reduce morbidity and mortality among displaced populations suffering from malaria, respiratory issues, or other chronic illnesses. UMCOR’s support will also allow for additional nurse staff to aid the center in managing daily patient consultations.
About 10,000 internally displaced people, and at least 30,000 host families in the area of Majengo will benefit from this support.
