Transparency International expresses its heartfelt condolences to the family of Gustave Sharangabo Makonene, a respected member of Transparency International Rwanda, who was murdered on 17 July. Transparency International also sends its support to Transparency International Rwanda at this time of great sadness and grief.

Mr. Makonene, 33, joined Transparency International Rwanda in 2011 and was working as a coordinator of the Advocacy and Legal Advice Centre in Rubavu at the time of his death. His job was to help people who complained about corruption in their lives.

Transparency International calls on the police to undertake a full investigation to identify the motive for the brutal attack and bring those responsible to justice.
