Five people were killed and hundreds of thousands evacuated after Typhoon Fitow hit eastern China, state media reported on Tuesday (October 8).

Packing winds up to 151 km (94 miles) per hour, Fitow hit Fuding city in Fujian province early on Monday (October 7) before weakening into a tropical storm later in the day, the official Xinhua news agency reported.

State broadcaster CCTV showed footage of residents being evacuated from their homes by rescue workers in Ningbo City of eastern Zhejiang province.

Four people are still missing, Xinhua said on Tuesday.

Flight and train services in Zhejiang province, south of Shanghai, were suspended on Monday.

In Wenzhou city in Zhejiang province, the storm destroyed over 1,700 houses and 46,800 hectares of crop land as well as killing many farm animals, CCTV said.

It was the 23rd typhoon to hit China this year, CCTV added.
