Turkish police fire smoke grenades at students in Ankara

by Reuters

Hundreds of students and protesters demonstrated in Ankara against reconstruction plans that includes part of the Middle East Technical University (METU) campus on Monday, as riot police used smoke grenades and water cannon to disperse the crowd.

Scuffles broke out between municipality workers and protesters who planted saplings at a construction site where dozens of trees have been uprooted in the past weeks.

The municipality plan opposed by the students involves building a road across the university campus and uprooting a large number of trees in the area.

The Middle East Technical University (METU) campus has one of the largest green spaces in the Turkish capital of Ankara.
