The country descended into chaos in March when the President was ousted by mostly Muslim rebels.
One man describes what it was like to come under attack. He was shot four times.
This woman was held hostage. Her family had to pay 400 dollars for her release -- a small fortune in this part of the world.
(SOUNDBITE) (Sango) VILLAGER, ALBERTINE GONDJE, SAYING:
"We are living in total fear here, most of the people are currently living in the bush. I came back here to try and find some medication for my sick child."
The U.N. Refugee Agency released footage of the village. Residents do what they can to survive.
(SOUNDBITE) (Sango) VOICE OF BEGOTTO FREDERIC OVER FOOTAGE OF HIM WORKING, FREDERIC SAYING:
"It's better to run and hide yourself in the bush and come back [later] to work for the farm."
Access to this region is difficult. But the UN says more aid is on the way.
