NEWS: WORLD AIDS DAY SERIES

Last week, the United Methodist Committee on Relief (UMCOR), began its editorial series on HIV and AIDS in observance of the upcoming World AIDS Day, Dec. 1.

For the next several weeks leading up to World AIDS Day, you’ll find compelling stories of lives affected by this devastating disease, and learn about the people and programs that are working to prevent further spread of the HIV virus.

Each story will highlight projects funded by the United Methodist Global AIDS Fund (UMGAF) that work to prevent mother-to-child HIV transmission; provide HIV testing and education for parents; expand healthcare services; and supply AIDS orphans with the nutrients they need to overcome dehydration.

Look for stories from the United States, Zimbabwe, Nicaragua, Malawi, Cameroon, and Armenia on www.umcor.org, and support the effort to fight against this deadly disease. You can also use resources published by the United Methodist Global AIDS Fund to start an HIV/AIDS initiative in your local community.

In 2014, UMGAF will concentrate its efforts on projects that focus on the vital task of preventing mother-to-child transmission of HIV and AIDS. To support this work, give to Advance #982345, the United Methodist Global AIDS Fund, or Advance #3021770, Global Health.

PRAYER: HURRICANE SANDY SURVIVORS

Please pray for Hurricane Sandy disaster survivors as they continue to recover emotionally, spiritually, and physically from last year’s storm. While some have been able to return to their homes, there are also hundreds of people whose recovery is only just beginning. Read more about what some survivors are experiencing in the aftermath of Sandy.

Please also undergird UMCOR’s relief-supply ministry, UMCOR Sager Brown, with your prayers and financial support as the depot is working to build its inventory of relief kits to meet urgent needs around the world.

CAREERS: UMCOR AND GLOBAL MINISTRIES

RESOURCE: FIVE BEST WAYS TO GIVE BULLETIN INSERT

When disasters flood media outlets with reports of devastation and loss, it often compels viewers to emotionally respond with what they feel will bring relief to affected survivors. UMCOR’s Five Best Ways to Give resource makes it easier.

UMCOR’s Five Best Ways to Give, was compiled from responders and disaster survivors across the country to guide you and your congregation in future giving. The list includes suggestions such as opening up your church as a haven where survivors can experience love, care, and peace, or, assembling much-needed relief kit items.
