MOGADISHU, Nov 8 (Reuters) - An explosion was heard near a hotel in the centre of Somalia's capital on Friday evening, followed shortly after by the sound of ambulance sirens as vehicles raced to the area, witnesses said.

The blast appeared to have struck near Hotel Maka, which lies on a main road that runs through Mogadishu. The capital has often been struck by bomb attacks, usually followed by claims of responsibility from the Islamist militant group al Shabaab.
