Responding to the dastardly incident in Mumbai and sharing the outrage with the community of Journalists, ActionAid India's Programme & Policy Director, Sehjo Singh says:

"The gang rape of a journalist in the heart of Mumbai is shocking and outrageous. ActionAid India condemns this incident, stands in solidarity with the survivor and demands immediate justice for her. "This incident also goes to show institutionalized neglect when it comes to making India's cities and villages safer for women, in spite of such long and active advocacy by women's groups across the country. "It is a testament to the fact that it is no longer enough to appeal to the state alone to ensure a safe city for women and girls. We have to move further on from mere discussions on state apathy and lack of adequate policing and start addressing what is causing this disappearance of a safe society, even in a city that was once considered safest among all metros in India. "ActionAid India calls for the society to resolve for a safer country for women and girls within homes and outside so that each woman and girl enjoys her right to develop her full human potential as her human right. This needs to begin with bringing to a halt the declining trend of child sex ratio caused by son preference and sex selection. "ActionAid India has been working with a large number of civil society organizations and grassroots NGOs and activists on the issue of disappearing daughters of India with the campaign Beti Zindabaad. A campaign for gender equality which seeks to address the vicious cycle of violence from before birth."
