Egypt police car hit by bomb, gunfire in Cairo attack-sources

CAIRO, Jan 7 (Reuters) - A bomb thrown from a car damaged an Egyptian police car in central Cairo on Tuesday in a drive-by attack by assailants who also raked the vehicle with gunfire, security officials said.

It was not immediately clear if there were any casualties in the attack, which targeted a traffic police checkpoint on a usually busy flyover near the upscale residential district of Zamalek, the officials said.

It was the latest in a series of attacks against security forces. Bombings and shootings have become commonplace since the army deposed Islamist President Mohamed Mursi in July following mass protests against his rule. (Writing by Tom Perry; Editing by Mike Collett-White)
