Security tight in Cairo ahead of Mursi trial

by Reuters

The Egyptian Army blocked vehicles from entering Cairo's Tahrir Square on Wednesday morning (January 8), ahead of the second day of former president Mohamed Mursi's trial on charges of inciting the killing of protesters during his time as head of state.

The charges relate to violence outside the presidential palace in December 2012, during protests ignited by a presidential decree that expanded Mursi's powers.

Egypt's army-backed authorities brought two new cases against Mursi last month, accusing him of conspiring against Egypt with the Palestinian group Hamas, Lebanon's Hezbollah and the Shi'ite Islamist government of Iran, and separately charging him over a mass jail break during the 2011 uprising against Hosni Mubarak.

Fourteen other Islamists are standing trial with Mursi.
