Colombia has one of the highest rates of teen pregnancy in Latin America. Nearly 20 percent of girls aged 14 to 19 are or have been pregnant.

Breaking the cycle of poverty that grips many teenage mothers and reducing high infant mortality rates among adolescents is the life mission of Catalina Escobar.

Anastasia Moloney visited her centre for teenage mothers, the Juan Felipe Gomez Escobar Foundation, in Colombia’s city of Cartagena to see how education and job training, while ensuring there are no more early pregnancies, are helping child mothers break the poverty trap.
