BERLIN, Feb 19 (Reuters) - Chancellor Angela Merkel is deeply saddened by the escalation of the violence in Ukraine and believes the entire situation now has to be reevaluated, government spokeswoman Christiane Wirtz said on Wednesday.

"The escalation of the situation in Ukraine deeply saddens her," Wirtz said at a news conference when asked if the time for sanctions against Ukraine had now arrived. "And obviously the situation has to be re-evaluated from today. There will be further steps in that regard. But we are not yet there." (Reporting by Stephen Brown; Writing by Erik Kirschbaum)
