ISTANBUL, Feb 22 (Reuters) - Turkish riot police fired tear gas on Saturday to disperse several thousand anti-government demonstrators in central Istanbul protesting against a new law tightening control of the Internet, a Reuters witness said.

Officers backed by water cannon cleared demonstrators from the main Istiklal shopping street near Taksim Square, some chanting "Everywhere Taksim, Everywhere Resistance". One banner read "(Prime Minister) Tayyip Erdogan, don't pull the Internet plug".
