Romania's ruling coalition ruptures as elections loom
Romania's Liberal Party pulled the plug on the coalition government on Tuesday, a break-up that might disrupt five years of economic reform backed by the International Monetary Fund (IMF) in the European Union's second poorest state.
HIDROELECTRICA
Romania will not be able to launch an initial public offering in its largest state power producer Hidroelectrica this year, as agreed under an aid deal led by the International Monetary Fund, because of an unfavourable court ruling on Tuesday.
BUDGET SURPLUS
Romania ran a consolidated budget surplus of 0.2 percent of gross domestic product in January, or 1.5 billion lei ($456.3 million), finance ministry data showed on Tuesday.
GRAFT PROBE
Romanian anti-corruption prosecutors asked parliament on Tuesday to waive the immunity of ex-finance minister Daniel Chitoiu to enable an investigation against him on suspicion of abuse of power and setting up a crime ring.
ENERGY SECTOR
Large European energy firms have poured billions of euros into revamping Romania's ageing energy sector, but much-needed new projects are unlikely to materialize without clear, predictable policies, foreign investors said on Tuesday.
