Chad fines CNPC unit $1.2 bln for environmental damage

N'Djamena, March 21 (Reuters) - The Chadian government has fined the local unit of China National Petroleum Corporation $1.2 billion for repeated environmental damage, a statement from the environment minister said on Friday.

"Following the non-respect of its obligations and repeated violations of environmental norms ... the government is demanding that CNPCIC ... repair the damage and pay a fine of $1.2 billion," the statement signed by Mahamat Issa Halikimi said.
