March 29 (Reuters) - An explosion followed by gunfire targeted a building close to the Independent Election Commission headquarters in Kabul on Saturday, staff and police reported.

"We can only confirm that a number of armed insurgents have entered a building close to the Independent Election Commission," said Kabul's police chief spokesman Hashmat Stanekzai.

An IEC official said the building penetrated by insurgents was several stories high and could be used to target the commission headquarters. (Reporting by Jessica Donati and Mirwais Harooni; Editing by Richard Borsuk)
