A city where there is little left to lose in Syria

by Reuters

There is little left to lose in this war-torn city in Syria.

Deraa in the southwest is considered the cradle of the uprising against President Bashar al-Assad.

Video obtained by Reuters shows the scars of a city at the center of the battle for control of the country.

It's been under rebel control for about a year. But it is targeted daily by the government.

(SOUNDBITE) (Arabic) RESIDENT OF DERAA CITY, ABU HILAL, SAYING:

"We are facing terrible conditions. We receive no humanitarian assistance, no bread, no fuel. This was a restaurant. This neighborhood here has been completely destroyed by bombings. They fire mortar shells and rockets at us daily."

Many residents have fled. For many, they no longer have a place to call home.

The U.N. reported Monday that it will have to cut the size of its food donations by 20 percent because of a shortage of funds from donors.

Syria's three-year-old conflict has killed more than 150,000 people.
