May 4 (Reuters) - An Oklahoma wildfire stoked by high winds and temperatures near 100 Fahrenheit (38 Celsius) destroyed several houses on Sunday and forced some residents near the town of Guthrie to flee, a fire official said.
Guthrie Fire Captain Dale Haggard said he did not know the size of the fire, but local media reports said it was burning 3,000 to 4,000 acres (1,200 to 1,600 hectares) by late on Sunday, the result of a controlled burn gone wrong.
"It's a very large fire and we're trying to get it contained," Haggard said.
Oklahoma City television station KOCO reported that overnight winds of up to 25 miles per hour (42 km per hour) could propel the fire further.
The station quoted Guthrie Fire Chief Eric Harlow as saying the fire had consumed six houses and that several residents and firefighters overcome by smoke were treated and released.
