The European Commission welcomes the Member States' support for its proposal to increase EU humanitarian aid for the victims of the Syrian crisis. Earlier this year, the Commission proposed a scaling up by €50 million to its humanitarian aid for this crisis – a decision which has now been supported by the Council. The extra funding is directed to life-saving healthcare, medicines, water supply and other primary needs of the Syrians inside the war-torn country and its refugees in the neighbouring countries.
The European Union is the largest donor of humanitarian aid to the victims of the Syrian crisis, with more than €2.8 billion in relief and recovery assistance from the EU and of its Member States, of which €615 million from the EU alone.
The Syrian conflict has resulted in the world's largest humanitarian and security disaster. Humanitarian needs and levels of displacement continue to increase. An entire generation of children has been exposed to war, violence and death, and has been deprived of basic freedoms, protection and education.
