MOSCOW, Aug 1 (Reuters) - Russian leader Vladimir Putin told President Barack Obama on Friday sanctions imposed on Moscow over the Ukraine crisis were counterproductive and the "current situation" was not in the interests of either country.
A Kremlin statement released after they spoke by telephone said "significant differences" remained between the two countries but both emphasised the importance of an "immediate and sustained ceasefire" in east Ukraine. (Reporting by Thomas Grove, Editing by Timothy Heritage)
