Case has made headlines in India, sparking outrage, embarrassment and shame
NEW DELHI (Thomson Reuters Foundation) - An Indian wrestling referee who was attending the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow has been arrested for alleged sexual assault, the Hindustan Times reported on Monday.
According to the report, Virender Singh Malik was held by police in the Scottish city after allegedly sexually assaulting a woman in a hotel on Saturday.
In a separate incident, another senior official, Indian Olympic Association Secretary General Rajeev Mehta was also arrested for drunk driving on Saturday.
The two men were in custody over the weekend and are due to appear in court on Monday.
The Indian High Commission in London confirmed the arrests of the two men and said they were trying to determine the full details of the cases, the report said.
The case has made headline news in India and sparked outrage and embarrassment on social media sites, with some calling it shameful and saying it has detracted from the achievements made by the Indian contingent who came in at fifth place in the Commonwealth medals table.
