On 3 August 2014 an earthquake with magnitude 6.5 hit Ludian County of Zhaotong City, Yunnan Province in China. Hundreds of mild to heavy aftershocks were felt afterwards causing further damage in the affected areas. As of 11 August, a total of 617 people have been reported to be killed, 112 are missing, and 3,143 have been injured. Around the epicentre of the earthquake over 80,000 houses have collapsed. A detailed assessment is going on to ascertain the full extent of the damage.
The central and local governments, as well as Chinese NGOs, including Amity Foundation, have started providing immediate relief in the form of ready-to-eat food, potable water and essential NFI items. However, damage to the road infrastructure has limited access to the affected areas. Amity has deployed a team of staff, along with a team from its local partner to carry out a rapid assessment to ascertain the situation, assess the extent of loss and damage and prioritise the needs of the affected population.
While the detailed assessment is being undertaken, the preliminary data indicates the needs in the areas of immediate to medium term food support, provision of interim shelter as well as reconstruction support to the most vulnerable families, supply of potable water & restoration of water sources, NFI distribution, livelihood restoration, health care and community based psychosocial health care.
Amity Foundation, the only ACT member in the country, has already begun its relief operation through provision of food, water and NFI distribution. This appeal intends to support provision of early recovery and rehabilitation to approximately 800 families.
