Western Nepal has been badly hit by monsoon torrential rains during the month of August. A series of massive floods hit 17 districts in mid and Far Western regions of Nepal on August 14-15 2014. According to the Ministry of Home Affairs, Emergency Operation Centre and Nepal Red Cross Society, at least 113 persons have died, 155 are injured, and more than 77 missing, 12,282 houses completely damaged, 13,695 partially damaged and more than 40,055 houses inundated leaving 12,276 families displaced. These figures are expected to increase as data are still being reported from the affected districts.
The districts of Bardiya, Surkhet, Banke, Dang, and Dailali have been most affected. Thousands of people have lost their belongings and many houses have been washed away. Standing crops have also been affected and yields will be much lower than normal. The affected population is in great need of both food and non-food items over the coming months.
Relief aid has been provided both through ACT Alliance Forum Nepal members and other agencies in the worst affected districts. There is now a need for additional food and non-food items as well as support for the early recovery of the affected population. ACT Alliance Forum Nepal, with Lutheran World Federation Nepal as the requesting member, is planning on providing immediate relief and recovery support to the worst affected and most marginalised families.
