As the new Commission headed by President Jean-Claude Juncker took office on 1 November, the Commission's Humanitarian Aid and Civil Protection department (ECHO) welcomes Christos Stylianides as its new Commissioner. The Commissioner also serves as the EU Ebola Coordinator.

Mr Stylianides is joining the Commission after a long career in the Cypriot government and the European Parliament. His nomination as commissioner comes at a challenging period for the humanitarian community, given the unprecedented humanitarian needs across the globe.
