As times change, big brands start courting same-sex couples

Tiffany & Co has released its first TV commercial featuring a gay couple marriage proposal as part of its "Will you?" advertising campaign.

The TV spot follows a print edition of the campaign that appeared earlier this year, and shows couples before, during and after the question has been popped.

The ad reflects Tiffany's "truly modern look at love, the proposal and marriage," the company said in a statement during the launch of the print campaign.

In the video version promoting Tiffany's engagement rings, two men embrace on the riverfront in front of New York's Brooklyn Bridge.

Tiffany, a 178-year-old company associated with romance and marriage, is not the first major brand to use same-sex couples in its advertising.

Clothing giant Banana Republic, travel site Expedia, retailers Nordstrom and JC Penney all have celebrated same-sex love to promote their products.

The print edition of the "Will You?" campaign was shot by fashion photographer Peter Lindbergh.

"These impactful scenes convey that modern love is not linear and that true love comes in a variety of forms," Tiffany said.
