VIDEO: Comic book “Priya’s Shakti” takes on fight against gender-based violence in India

by Shanshan Chen | Thomson Reuters Foundation

“Priya’s Shakti” is a multimedia project which aims to raise awareness of violence against women in India. It uses ‘augmented reality’ technology in which viewers can watch a pop-up comic book animation and listen to audio using an app on their smartphones. In the story, Priya, a rape-victim-turned-superhero, with the help of the Goddess Parvati, is determined to stop the gender-based violence that affects hundreds of thousands of women in India. The project uses the popular format of the comic strip in an effort to reach a wide audience in India and around the world - calling for action against sexual harassment and violence. Ram Denineni, the director of Priya’s Shakti, speaks to the Thomson Reuters Foundation about the inspiration and motivation behind his work.
