Halfway through the decade, Europe continues to deal with unforgiving economic situation that has pushed many of its citizens to take drastic measures. High unemployment has forced many to emigrate, increased living costs have forced young adults to live with their parents, and others have either had to move to cities in search of a career or stay where they are and hope the economy turns around.

The crucial issue is whether Europeans can afford living in Europe. The 3rd Europe Housing Forum that takes place in Berlin, 18-20 November, 2015 will seek to stimulate both discussion and serve as a launching point for practical recommendations to help demonstrate how housing can play a crucial role in successfully improving social and economic conditions across Europe. The forum is organised by the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies, the UN Human Settlements Programme (UN-Habitat), United Nations Development Programme, the United Nations Economic Commission for Europe (UNECE) and Habitat for Humanity International.

“Impacting the housing deficit will take an integrated approach,” says Greg Foster, Area Vice President, Habitat for Humanity Europe, Middle East and Africa. “The Housing Forum is an opportunity to challenge current thinking and solutions. Attenders will hear from some of the world’s thought leaders on three key themes–affordability, sustainability and liveability–and have the opportunity to discus and debate new ways to tackle the housing issues facing this region.”

“The EU has set a 2020 strategic goal of elevating 20 million out of poverty and housing is recognized as an effective tool to achieve the this target, commented Foster. “It can boost economic development, reduce crippling energy costs, and address environmental issues that continue to put a drag on Europe’s economy.”

The 3rd Europe Housing Forum will ask attenders to participate in making change happen and successfully develop future communities. It will be an opportunity to firmly set goals, inspire new solutions, and deliver practical recommendations that will provide citizens with decent, safe places to live and work.
