Beauty in Transition is a hair salon on wheels. Refashioned from an ice-cream truck, it now provides salon services to homeless people. Founder Jody Woods drives it across New York City moving between nine homeless shelters. "Homelessness is something that stigmatised, because it is a vulnerable position and people tend to fear what makes them vulnerable," she says.
Giving people a respite from what can be a daily struggle for survival and helping build confidence, Beauty in Transition is manned by volunteers, like stylist Jose Montanez, who himself used to be homeless. "It has nothing to do with makeovers. It's more about your self esteem, I guess that's the most important part of it."
