"Our houses began to fall apart. We didn't know what to do"

After a mining company began operating near Dali Village, part of Huainan City in China’s eastern Anhui province in 2003, almost all its residents were forced to flee due to subsidence. 

Once touted to become the largest coalmine in Asia, locals thought it would help with the development and prosperity of their village. 

But now out of 1,000 villagers, only 20 remain and their houses have begun to sink into the ground.
