The main aim of this course is to develop the participants’ competencies to manage people and projects effectively and apply them in a humanitarian context. The training course focuses on the application of management tools, techniques, and approaches.

Course Objectives

By the end of this course, participants will be able to:

  • Describe the role and characteristics of an effective manager in humanitarian practice.
  • Use tools and techniques to help themselves design, plan and implement a project successfully.
  • Apply theory and practice to the task of building and developing a high-performance team.
  • Use a coaching style to support and develop individual team members.
  • Identify, assess and manage risks to a project, including financial risks.
  • Devise ways to monitor, evaluate and report on project progress.
  • Demonstrate accountability to donors, beneficiaries and other stakeholders.
  • Evaluate and reflect on personal performance in project and people management, and develop an action plan for further learning.

What does the course cover?

  • Understanding the nature and impact of emergencies.
  • Understanding the qualities of an effective manager in humanitarian response.
  • Assessing needs and securing funding for a project.
  • Building the team and coaching individuals.
  • Creating a log-frame and employing a range of planning tools.
  • Ensuring accountability, particularly to beneficiaries.
  • Assessing and managing risk.
  • Coordinating and collaborating with other stakeholders.
  • Monitoring and evaluating a project, and reporting on progress.

Who should apply?

The course is primarily aimed at humanitarian personnel who have or will have a management role in emergency situations. It is also relevant for project managers in the development sector interested in developing competencies for managing projects in emergencies. Individuals with humanitarian experience looking to develop project and people management skills will enhance their professional skills.

Training Methodology

The course is facilitated by trainers with extensive experience in conducting assessments and undertaking relief work. Throughout the training, emphasis will be on active learning through participatory group exercises, case studies and scenarios, learning games, and focused discussions. The training is planned and conducted in collaboration with relief agencies and specialist organizations. Informal exchange of experience is a vital part of every course with trainers and participants bringing in real life examples.

Residential* Fee - INR 50000/$715      

Non-Residential** Fee – INR 32500/$465

* Includes tuition fee, breakfast, lunch, dinner, refreshments during training and shared accommodation (room to be shared by two participants).

  • The course fee is inclusive of applicable taxes in India.
  • Base currency for RedR India is INR. All the billing will be in INR, with equivalent USD / GBP or other currency rate prevailing at the time of billing being applicable.
